Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) utilise heat stored within
the ground to heat various systems.
The earth absorbs a large proportion of solar radiation, which
in the UK keeps the ground below 1500mm at a stable temperature
of between 11 – 12°C all year round.
The temperature of the earth is therefore higher than the
mean air temperature in the winter but lower than the mean
air temperature in the summer, which makes GSHP systems suitable
for both heating and cooling applications.
There are three key elements to a GSHP system operating in
heating mode.
• The ground heat exchanger
• The heat pump
• The heat distribution system
