Commercially available small-scale wind turbines are generally
suited to rural applications. However, before considering
the installation of a wind turbine, the potential site should
be assessed for the available wind resource.
The scale of any assessment needs to be relevant to the size
and budget of the proposed project. To be economically viable
in the UK a potential site needs average wind speeds of 5
to 6 meters/second (m/S) at the hub height.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) wind speed model
(NOBAL) can be accessed from the British Wind Energy Association
website which will provide a useful indication of the wind
resource in any area in the UK.
Ideal locations are those where the wind turbine can be positioned
on top of a smooth hill, with an absence of obstructions in
the prevailing wind direction. Planning Permission is normally
required and local planning authorities should be consulted
at an early stage.
